Orange-Spiced Tea with Organic Lime-Maté Boost

Orange-Spiced Tea with Organic Lime-Maté Boost

Makes 1 serving; about 120 mg caffeine

by Kate Heyhoe

If you prefer tea to coffee and savory to sweet, this is the bumped-up brew for you. One cup packs more than twice the caffeine of regular black tea, with a balanced citrusy taste that’s neither bitter nor sweet. The sophisticated flavor is one that’s good to sip on, and the brew surpasses coffee when it comes to the morning jolt.

The Guayaki Yerba Mate Organic Energy Shot is a bit pricey at over $3 for 2-ounces, but you can use part of a bottle and refrigerate the rest for up to 5 days. It’s handy for customizing your buzz level: 1 tablespoon contains 35 mg of caffeine. (One 2-ounce bottle = 4 tablespoons, or 12 teaspoons). I like the flavor, and it doesn’t have that faux-sweetener aftertaste found in other energy shots.

In this recipe, orange-spiced black tea (like Constant Comment) meets half a bottle of Guayaki’s lime-tangerine flavored mate energy shot, which injects 70 mg of caffeine to the tea. Assuming an 8-ounce cup of brewed black tea contains 50 mg of caffeine, then this bumped up brew boasts a minimum of 120 mg of caffeine – more than in a cup of coffee.

Recipe:

  • 1 (8-ounce) cup brewed orange spice black tea [about 50 mg caffeine]
  • 1 fluid ounce (about 2 tablespoons) Guayaki Yerba Maté Organic Energy Shot, Lime Tangerine flavor [70 mg caffeine]

Stir the maté shot into the hot tea. Enjoy it plain or add sweetener as desired.

Note: The caffeine content of tea depends on many factors, including how long it’s brewed and the type of tea leaves. This book uses 50 mg of caffeine as an average for black tea, but one 8-ounce cup can range from about 15 to 75 mg.

Exactly how is chocolate made? The raw ingredient from the cacao tree undergoes several steps before becoming the luscious product sold as kisses, bonbons, and bars. Now, kids and adults can experience part of the process with this Make Your Own Chocolate Kit. It contains simple instructions and packets for making eight ounces of dark chocolate on the stovetop or in the microwave. The kit skips the fundamental steps of harvesting and fermenting raw cacao beans, but you’ll get a good feel for what a chocolatier does.

Created by the makers of Glee Gum, this DIY chocolate kit contains Fair Trade and organic cocoa butter, cocoa powder, confectioner’s sugar, starter crystals, a temperature indicator, paper candy liners, an educational story about the history of chocolate, plus a few cacao beans to nibble on.  Melt the cocoa butter, stir in the cocoa powder and sugar, let cool to the right temperature, and temper the chocolate with the starter crystals. Voila! Homemade chocolate. The Make Your Own Chocolate Kit retails for $13.95; it’s sold at gift stores and online at GleeGum.com.

By the way, if you’re keen on serious chocolate making, dive into Navitas Naturals selection of cacao products. They sell organic premium cocoa butter, cocoa powder, cacao beans (whole), and nibs (more details in a future post, but for now, explore Cacao under the Products menu at NavitasNaturals.com).

Death Wish Coffee Makes Powerful Claims

DeathWish3panelDeath Wish Coffee Has Twice the Caffeine

Who needs energy drinks? Death Wish Coffee is riding the caffeine craze with coffee it claims has “more than 200 percent caffeine” – which is a little misleading, since they really mean it has twice the caffeine (not 200 percent more caffeine) as regular coffee. The company says their coffee isn’t juiced up with added caffeine, but instead is made with beans that are naturally high in caffeine, and then roasted to ensure less caffeine loss. But it’s unclear whether these beans are robustas or arabicas, and where they are grown. I’ve got a few other questions for the company and have sent in a media request. Stay tuned and in the meantime, here are links to Oddity Central’s review and the Death Wish Coffee website.

Stay Alert caffeinated gum was initially a joint project by Walter Reed Army researchers and Wrigley’s Gum. After its success with American troops, Israeli’s elite pilots and special operation forces added it to their supply arsenal in 2011. The pilots were skeptical at first, but after getting past the taste, they now carry caffeinated gum on all missions lasting more than 48 hours.
